True Grit Movie

True Grit is a 1968 novel by Charles Portis about a 14-yo girl who undertook a quest to avenge her father’s death at the hands of a drifter named Tom Chaney. A western movie based on the novel and starring John Wayne was released in 1969. But that film was more a showcase for John Wayne than the story of the girl. So the Coen brothers have decided to bring us a remake that would focus on the girl's point of view. The new True Grit movie is starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Hailee Steinfeld, Barry Pepper, and Paul Rae. The film will be released on December 25, 2010.

Here's a first look at Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges on the set of the movie True Grit:

Cast:
- Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl
- Jeff Bridges as Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, a US Marshal
- Matt Damon as LeBouef, a Texas ranger
- Josh Brolin as Tom Chaney, a murderous drifter

Plot:
"Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) she can find, a man with true grit, Reuben J. Rooster Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who wants Chaney for his own purposes.
The unlikely trio will find danger and surprises on the journey."

The Coen brothers explain how their take on True Grit will differ from John Wayne's movie:

"It's partly a question of point-of-view. The book is entirely in the voice of the 14-year-old girl. That sort of tips the feeling of it over a certain way. I think the book is much funnier than the movie was so I think, unfortunately, they lost a lot of humour in both the situations and in her voice. It also ends differently than the movie did. You see the main character — the little girl — 25 years later when she's an adult. Another way in which it's a little bit different from the movie — and maybe this is just because of the time the movie was made — is that it's a lot tougher and more violent than the movie reflects. Which is part of what's interesting about it."
